The Muslim Students Association of Georgetown.

About Us

The Muslim Students Association of Georgetown University is an organization comprised of Muslim students, and serves to unite the Muslim student community through a series of spiritual, educational and social activities. As the only organization currently on Georgetown’s campus that deals with Muslim students, it also helps to ensure that some of the needs of Muslim students are met. For many, it fills the role of being a home away from home.

Several factors connected to the make-up of its members and its surrounding environment give GU MSA its very unique identity, and make it a strong and dynamic group. Located in Washington DC at a Jesuit institution, Georgetown attracts people of all walks of life, and with all kinds of interests. Just as the government and non-profit national organizations head-quartered in Washington provide a wealth of information and opportunities, the Muslim organizations located in the area similarly serve a vital purpose. With over half a million Muslims and 25 masjids in the Baltimore-Washington Area, dozens of Islamic schools, including two graduate institutions, a range of national political and media organizations, and think tanks, Washington houses a variety of resources for any Muslim to easily take advantage of.

On Georgetown’s campus, several departments add to the resources available to the Muslim community. In particular, there is the Center for Muslim Christian Understanding (CMCU), the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS), the Theology Department and Campus Ministry.

"Imam Yahya Hendi is the Muslim Chaplain at Georgetown University, the first American University to hire a full-time Muslim chaplain.  He has been the Chaplain at Georgetown University for the past 9 years. Imam Hendi is also the Imam of the Islamic Society of Frederick, and is the Muslim Chaplain at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He also serves as a member and the spokesperson of the Islamic Jurisprudence Council of North America. He serves as adjunct faculty member For John Hopkins University, Office of professional development, and the Fordham University."  (

All of these factors go into making the Georgetown MSA a great example of a dynamic and diverse community, a fact which is reflected in the membership and the activities that it organizes.

The GU MSA is one of the most active student organizations on campus. We organize events each semester, including everything from lectures by prominent Muslim scholars, religious discussion groups and inter-faith dialogues to dinners, community service projects, social events, and religious discussion groups.
