Georgetown Mock Trial Looks Back on Successful Invitational Season, Prepares for Regional Tournaments

After a whirlwind of invitational competitions in the fall, Georgetown’s Mock Trial and Law Team is gearing up for the regional tournaments which will determine if the team makes it to the post season. Georgetown's four teams competed successfully at tournaments up and down the East Coast. Team members garnered numerous individual awards and Georgetown teams placed at the Spider Classic Invitational Tournament hosted by the University of Richmond.

2009-2010 Case: State of Midlands v. Jackie Owens

Midlands has been rocked by a high profile murder case. Three entertainment moguls, Casey Maxwell, Jackie Owens, and Jacob Bennett teamed up to make the most prolific entertainment group Midlands has ever seen: Trifecta Entertainment.

However, after the majority shareholder Jacob Bennett rejected a proposal for a corporate buyout he went missing. A few months later his body was discovered at the Midlands Marina stuffed in a duffle bag. An eyewitness, Hunter Baxamusa places two people on Casey Maxwell’s boat at the time of the shooting. Evidence collected by Detective Ari Finch and CSI Jordan Lee point to both Casey Maxwell and Jackie Owens. And now Maxwell has turned state’s witness against Jackie Owens.

We find out that Jackie Owens has a gambling problem from entourage member Shannon Stark and personal assistant Sydney Michaels. However Owens has an alibi provided by friend Alex Grace. Expert entomologist Loren Charney puts the time of death when Jackie Owens was in Europe. Did Maxwell act alone and is the prosecution trying to get two for the price of one? Or did Jackie Owens in desperate need of financial advice turn to a gun to solve his money problems? We hope to argue both ways successfully in our upcoming tournaments at the University of Richmond, University of Pittsburg, and Duke University.

Mock Trial Team seeks sponsors

Georgetown's Mock Trial and Law Team needs your help! As a student-run organization that receives only modest financial support from the University, donations by parents, alumni, and community members are essential for the Team's success. For example, the Team was able to send two teams to the National Championship in Des Moines last year only because of thousands of dollars in contributions from generous sponsors.

If you are interested in sponsoring our team, please check out our sponsorship page, download our sponsorship request letter, or contact us at gumocktrial@gmail.com for more information. Thanks for your interest!
