Leaders in Education About Diversity

About Us

LEADers:

Carolyn Chambers (COL '11)

Scott Chessare (SFS '10)
Scott Chessare is originally from the Chicago area and brings with him to the East Coast a strong sense of Midwestern pride.  Scott began his career at Georgetown with diversity education while attending the YLEAD pre-orientation program.  Scott is particularly interested in working with LGBTQ issues at Georgetown and currently serves on the Board of GU Pride.  Scott hopes that his work with LEAD will help to create a Georgetown community that is more conscious of diversity in all its many facets.  Scott's passion for working with diversity issues extends into academia as well; he is planning to pursue a regional studies degree focused on Russia -- particularly ethnic and cultural minorities (Bashkir, Tatar, etc...) within Russia.

Emily Durfee (SFS '11)

Ellie Gunderson (COL '10)

Ellie is proud to be from Detroit, Michigan, and represents the Midwest to the fullest.  She attended YLEAD, fell in love with all of the LEADers, and knew she had to join LEAD.  In high school, Ellie put diversity work at the forefront of her education as an intern for the Youth Dialogues on Race & Ethnicity in Metro Detroit and as a coordinator of the Annual Youth Diversity Symposium in Southfield, MI.  Ellie is currently a resident of the Social Justice & Diversity Living/Learning Community, and is especially interested in racial and socioeconomic diversity issues.  Her other activities include assistant secretary of the NAACP, tutor for the ASK Program, and active member of the Black Theatre Ensemble, BSA, and GU Women of Color.  Ellie plans to major in Sociology - Social Justice Analysis and minor in African-American Studies, and her goal is to become a civil rights attorney.

Flávia Menezes (COL '08)

Flávia Menezes is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, though she was lucky to have been able to experience living in six different countries throughout the course of her life, which greatly contributed to her having learned the great value and utter importance of fostering D7+ in all aspects of our lives.  It is with great passion that she joined LEAD during her freshman year at Georgetown , in order to actively work to build greater awareness and sensivity to issues of diversity in our campus community.  Fervently concerned with women's issues, she is a volunteer at the Women's Center,
is active in Take Back The Night, is the Outreach Co-Chair for GU Women of Color, and has acted in Georgetown 's annual performances of the "Vagina Monologues" for the past two years.  She is also on the Diversity Action Council's Communications Committee, is active as a brother in the Alpha Phi Omega co-ed service fraternity, and volunteers at the Latino Economic Development Corporation in Adams Morgan.  After having served as a freshman RA her sophomore year and being an International Pre-Orientation advisor for freshman, she currently serves on the Residential Judicial Council and is a COL Peer Advisor.  Utterly committed to cultural diversity and to work relating to the promotion of global equality and development, Flávia was in Argentina in the Summer of 2006 to participate in "The Politics and Economics of Power and Inequality in Latin America" program, and will be studying abroad in France during the Spring of 2007.

Sophia Zeinu (COL '10), Co-Chair
Sophia was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 17, 1988.  Even though she was born in the United States, both of her parents are Ethiopian.  She was first introduced to diversity work in high school through classes she was enrolled in, as well as through her work as a peer mentor.  She is currently involved in BSA and GUSA, is on the Freshman Committee of ASG, and is an ASK Tutor.
